Ed's Precision Manufacturing, Ltd.
Combines Precision Machining with High Volume Production
Ed's Precision Mfg., is in the fastener modification business and the manufacturing of special unique parts. The scope of the company's activities is best defined by the parts they are producing, from a 2-56 machine screw to a 6", 6-pitch, left hand thread hex nut. They also have the ability to produce a 25" (or greater) machined part and a wide array of precision component parts, from prototype quantities to high volume, at competitive prices.
Owner Ed DeCora recently moved almost 70 percent of sophisticated drills, screw machines, lathes, CNC lathes and mills into a new 25,000 square foot facility on a five acre tract at the edge of Houston. It's one of the nation's most modern and sophisticated machine shops dedicated to fastener modification and production.
Typical of the company's machine tool investment is a CNC controlled Swiss screw machine. According to DeCora, "This kind of equipment rewrites the rule book on screw machine capabilities. We now have the speed of a screw machine and the consistent accuracy of computer programming."
"We have built a high precision, quality driven machine shop that every fastener distributor in the country can consider an extension of his own capabilities," DeCora explained. "We are bringing in a state-of-the-art machining and automation equipment so that we're ready to respond to the evolving needs of tomorrow's marketplace for precision parts, consistent quality and high volume economy. This is a fastener manufacturing shop capable of turning-out 500,000 piece runs on a competitive basis."
Ed's Precision Mfg. works exclusively for fastener distributors and, over the years, has evolved and extremely "distributor friendly" program. Standard parts can be shipped into Ed's warehouse in volume and released in smaller quantities on a blanket order schedule. Drop shipment programs, direct to end users, can include a distributor's own cartons and packing slips. The company even offers 24-hour emergency service!
Ed's Precision Mfg. high tech CNC machine tools can provide tolerances within+-.0002" in every dimension. Because close tolerance parts can be affected by temperature extremes, the new plant is completely climate controlled. When you are checking tolerances this close, even the slightest shrinkage or expansion is significant. DeCora smiled as he recalled the story of one customer who checked some incoming parts when they came off the truck and called to say they were oversized and out of tolerance. Confident that the parts were made to tolerance and realizing that they had spent many hours in a hot truck, DeCora suggested that the parts be set aside in an open area until morning and then checked again. They passed the customer's rigid inspection without a problem.
With sophisticated automatic feeds and computerized programming, Ed's Precision Mfg. maintains close tolerances in economical high volume runs.
Lathe capabilities provide specialized shoulder bolts, captivation, trimmed head bolts, dog points and cone points, screw machine parts, spacers, male and female standoffs, O=Ring grooves, cut threads and rolled threads.
Threading capabilities cover 2-56 threads and larger, left hand threads, self-cutting threads, metric threads, Acme threads and Class 5 interference threads.
The company's abrasive cut off and chamfer operations accommodate hex head bolts, socket head cap screws, flat head machine screws, double ended studs and all-thread studs.
Precision drilling equipment makes it possible to drill up to three holes in a socket head cap screw or hex head bolt or nut. Cotter pin holes are routinely drilled in threaded and unthreaded shanks. Holes are also drilled in such items as Tommy Bar nuts and Grease bolts.
In addition, Ed's Precision Mfg. is fully equipped for tapping, slotting and the hex broaching of socket heads.
This high tech, fully equipped facility has an exceptional track record for providing unique fasteners in all material grades including plastics, alloy steel, stainless steel, 17-4, Monels, Inconels, Hastelloy and Titanium. The versatility and capability of Ed's Precision Mfg. can turn a distributor's most difficult challenge into a sales opportunity.
"Many of the distributor's we work with have come to accept us as a technical partner," DeCora explained. "They put us in direct contact with their customers so that, together, we can develop the most cost effective way to meet their needs." Pausing for a moment, he added, " We're very proud of the degree of trust we have earned in the industry."
Ed DeCora is fully aware of the high quality standards to which the fastener industry now performs. The company's Quality Assurance operation is certified under MIL-J45208 A and, according to DeCora, ISO 9000 approval is in the company's future.
How does someone carve out such a unique niche in the fastener business? In Ed DeCora's case, it's all in the family. From grandparents on down, DeCora's family has been involved in the distribution, manufacture and modification of fasteners. Having this background in the fastener industry enables DeCora to understand and respond to the most unique fastener requirements.
Ed DeCora is confident that his commitment to state-of-the-art technology, his refusal to compromise on quality and his dedication to distributor service have positioned his company well for the demands of the new millennium.
